Cathy Green, the 2021 recipient, steered her organization through the storm that was Covid-19 while improvising and innovating on what it means to be a museum. Museums can often be a place of quiet reflection for observing history. The Wisconsin Maritime Museum has been transformed into a living experience that transcends its walls. You can start your day with sunrise yoga on the rooftop overlooking downtown Manitowoc, spend the day exploring maritime history, have a cocktail at the rooftop sub pub at sunset, and then pack your duffel for an overnight stay on Manitowoc’s newest AirBnB – the USS Cobia submarine. With the new NOAA Sanctuary “Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast” designation, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has an even more important role to play in telling the shipwreck stories of this underwater national park. With her adept leadership, she has navigated a path to keeping the museum relevant, alive and an exciting place to discover why Manitowoc is Wisconsin’s Maritime Capital.
